This challenge awaits you:

New emission limits and ambitious CO2 legislation are presenting commercial vehicle manufacturers with new challenges that cannot be met with a classic diesel powertrain. That is why we at IAV are developing a new generation of powertrains for commercial vehicles. Among other things, we are investigating approaches to electrification and hybridization, but also alternative fuels such as hydrogen.

In addition to alternative forms of powertrains, the field of the "Internet of Things" as well as "Machine Learning" continues to develop. Here, IAV is developing concepts and implementing them to make future commercial vehicle applications "smarter".

In particular, the topic of condition-based maintenance will play a key role for future commercial vehicles. This involves evaluating large volumes of data in order to draw conclusions about the condition of the vehicle.

For this purpose, "hardware-related" vehicle data must be recorded, compressed and sent. The data aggregated at a central location ("cloud") is then evaluated to ensure continuous monitoring of the systems and components.
In the area of function and software development for the above-mentioned challenges, we are looking for motivated/dedicated students* who have already gained experience in function or software development, or who would like to expand this experience and who have a desire to look "outside the box".
The activity can also take place in the context of a final thesis. The task is composed according to the type of employment, qualification and interest.

Your Tasks:

  • Theoretical research on the influences of different fuels on the engine / powertrain system

  • Preprocessing and analysis of measurement data with different fuels

  • Creation of a concept for the recognition of the type of fuel used

  • Prototypical implementation on a real-time system

  • - Commissioning and testing on the HIL or engine test bench

Necessary Skills:

  • Ongoing studies in engineering or natural sciences such as electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, automotive engineering, control engineering or a comparable course of study

  • Knowledge in the field of combustion processes and exhaust gas aftertreatment

  • Knowledge of model-based function development with MATLAB/Simulink

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Linux/Docker/AWS as well as version management tools an advantage

  • Motivated and team-oriented appearance paired with a structured and independent way of working

  • Experience in Python and C/C++ programming languages.
