Master Thesis - Spin Dynamics for NMR Hyperpolarization

If you are interested in creative problem solving at the interface between chemistry and physics, with the chance to mix hands-on experimental work with theory+simulations, this opportunity may be for you. The function of every cell and organism depends critically on the dynamic interactions between biological macromolecules and on their correct three-dimensional structure. Faulty interactions and misfolded structures lead to disease and aging. In our Institute of Biological Information Processing (IBI) - Structual Biochemistry (IBI-7), research aims to understand these interactions and to determine the three-dimensional structure of protein complexes involved in crucial cellular processes.

The Hyperpolarization Methods research group working at IBI-7 is open for applications for a Masters thesis project in the field of nuclear spin dynamics. We use a method called parahydrogen-induced polarization, which is a hyperpolarization technique to enhance the NMR/MRI signals of small molecules by a factor of 10⁴ - 10⁵, to enable exciting new applications in medical diagnostics and materials characterization. The hyperpolarization step requires the use of designed magnetic field pulse sequences, and we are looking for a Masters student to work in this area.

Your Job

This project on the topic of hyperpolarization using parahydrogen-induced polarization has two possible directions:

  • Simulating and implementing NMR pulse sequences to manipulate hyperpolarized spin states
  • Constructing instrumentation to do low-field NMR experiments

Your Profile

  • Current master studies in physics, chemistry, materials science or similar
  • Basic experience with NMR is beneficial
  • Willing to work within a multidisciplinary and collaborative research environment
  • Curiosity and excitement to learn
  • Good knowledge of spoken English
