This challenge awaits you:

The requirements of legislation and customers present vehicle manufacturers with major challenges for future mobility. Battery-electric powertrains are considered a key technology for the decarbonization of the mobility sector. The safety of battery systems is one of the most important criteria for increasing the acceptance of electric vehicles among the general public. Media reports on burning electric vehicles and the rapid development and spread of fire require the development of effective safety concepts at cell and battery pack level. This internship will investigate and evaluate the effects of innovative cooling systems and thermal barriers on thermal propagation using 3D CFD.

Your Tasks:

  • You actively work on current development projects for innovative vehicle batteries with the help of 3D CFD simulations.
  • You further develop simulation models to predict thermal runaway of individual cells and thermal propagation in battery modules.
  • You work on the development of innovative safety concepts to avoid catastrophic thermal damage events.
  • You use tools such as CONVERGE, STAR-CCM+ and Python for your work.

Necessary Skills:

  • Advanced degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, physical engineering, information technology in mechanical engineering, chemistry or a comparable field of study
  • Good knowledge in the fields of thermodynamics, fluid and structural mechanics
  • Knowledge of battery systems and/or electrophysicochemical processes
  • Experience in programming and data analysis using Python

Desired Skills:

  • Independent working style and a high degree of initiative, commitment and creativity
  • With appropriate qualifications/experience, it is also possible to work as a student trainee
  • Good CFD knowledge
