Master-Thesis in Neural Networks for Aerodynamic Modeling within Flight Physics, Aerodynamic Dataset Team (d/f/m)

  • Duration: 6-12 months

You will be part of the “Aerodynamic Dataset and SR&J Team”, within the Aerodynamic department in Flight Physics. The team has the responsibility to generate and update aerodynamic models/representations of all Airbus combat aircraft in development and in operation based on both experimental and numerical data. Purpose of our work is to build the basis (i.e. the aerodynamic dataset model) for proper flight clearances, flight control law designs, performance and load estimations as well as aerodynamic design upgrades.

Topic:

We are currently investigating new and innovative machine learning approaches for generating an aerodynamic dataset for combat aircraft. Therefore, the thesis will include the following tasks:

  • Understanding the aerodynamic characteristics that are key for a combat aircraft

  • Development of machine learning methods for aerodynamic dataset generation

  • Application of developed machine learning models to large combat aircraft datasets capturing the whole flight envelope

  • Contribution to the introduction of a new and more efficient digital way of working

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Student in Aerospace Engineering with affinity for programming or student in Information Technology with affinity for Aerospace.

  • Advanced programming skills in Python (pyTorch, Numpy).

  • Experience in implementing and applying machine learning algorithms is a plus.

  • Basic understanding of aerodynamics is a plus.

  • Affinity to combat aircraft is a plus.

 Desired skills and qualifications

  • Enrolled full time student (d/f/m) within Information Technology, Aerospace Engineering, Aerodynamics or similar field of study.

  • Knowledge with Machine Learning.

  • Good skills with Python.

  • Affinity to combat aircraft is a plus.

  • Skills:

    • Autonomous work style

    • Curious to try new things

    • Fast learner

  • Language: Fluent in either German or English.
