Our purpose is simple - to deliver a sustainable future for the world through science and collaboration. If you’re looking for a challenge and meaningful role, you’re in the right place.
About you and this role:
We are looking for you, an ambitious Master student (m/f/d), to support our Mobility and Transportation Electronics TS&D team by doing an internship project in Silicones failure mechanism exploration by test methodology and validation for our location in Wiesbaden, Germany, where you'll play a crucial role in Dow Mobility and Transportation.
Dow Mobility and Transportation, part of Dow Consumer Solutions, enhances the reliability, performance and sustainability of transportation and industrial customers’ applications. Our silicone materials cover a range of elastomers for airbags, connector seals, under-hood and interior applications, high-voltage transmission, battery safety, lighting, and consumer products. They deliver critical attributes such as advanced thermal and chemical resistance, desirable haptics and reduced environmental impact. We combine insights into customer needs and market trends with deep technical expertise to deliver a broad portfolio of materials that perform to the highest standards and protect people and the planet.
Project Description
High power electronics push the temperature stability boundaries of materials used to environmentally protect them well past conventional applications. Silicone gels are desired with stability at 200C, 225C and even higher temperature. These high temperatures not only stretch the material capabilities, but also challenge traditional ways of testing stability as application specifics promote new failure mechanisms for which current methods are inadequate. Suppliers are faced with the need to create enhanced product stability with proven and standardized test methodology that addresses both customer performance requirements and the scientific principles underlying the failure mechanisms. A Master student will be supporting development teams’ efforts as a technical service and development scientist in developing these methods and their validation. Project is to discover fundamental understanding of the science involved with the failure mechanisms and potentially develop new methodologies that would impact Dow initially and eventually the entire industry.
Qualifications
- You are currently studying for a master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Material Science, Polymer Chemistry, or Polymer Engineering
- You have experience in working in a lab, safety following good lab practices and have an interest in industrial electronics, transportation electronics and electric vehicles
- You demonstrate a passion for material sciences, fundamental understanding of material failure mechanisms and new test methods development
- You can work independently but you are also a good team player collaborating with people from different functions, geographies and background.
- You take initiative and are proactive regarding learning new skills
- You have good communication and written skills (especially proficient in English, basic German is required, French is a plus) proactively sharing what you are doing and what assistance you need to progress on your project
- You are curious and passionate about innovation with a strong drive for results and feel a strong sense of achievement by providing real solutions
Additional Note
- You can start between February and March 2025 for a period of 6 months (exact timing to be discussed).
