In the frame of the ZEROe project at Airbus the storage and distribution system for liquid hydrogen is a crucial part for a future sustainable aircraft. In the actual concept and preliminary design analysis phase, the specificities of cryogenic temperatures and their effect on the mechanical performance of the system components are under investigation. Besides static load cases, which mainly drive the assessment and sizing of the actual design proposals, also the dynamic behavior of such components is expected to be a driving factor for more sophisticated designs.

Therefore, the emphasis of this study is to consider either a local component (coupling or bellows unit) or a typical pipework assembly of such for modal analysis under operational thermo-mechanical conditions. Special emphasis of the study is the comparison of the model characteristics under liquid hydrogen (LH2) influence, provoking cryogenic temperatures, and the re-heating of such a pipework during absence of LH2 flow. Due to the impact of cryogenic temperatures on the stiffness and deformation of the pipework, an impact on the modal characteristics is expected as well.

You will be working at the largest production site for civil aircraft situated in Hamburg. Its location on the southern banks of the river Elbe includes the option to commute by ferry. Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Literature research and coverage of the main theoretical foundations with respect to the dynamic behavior of pipes under cryogenic temperatures.

  • Creation of a thermo-mechanical model in Simcenter 3D based on a given pipe assembly (comprising e.g. a straight pipe, a flange coupling as well as a bellows unit).

  • Computation of the modal characteristics of this structure under typical thermal and mechanical boundary conditions informed by literature.

  • Comparison of the cryogenic and room temperature cases and identification of driving design parameters.

  • Optional: Optimisation of the pipe assembly by design exploration and comparison of modal characteristics to the baseline.

  • Coverage of the work in a report (thesis) maintaining the quality standards of scientific writing and good scientific practice.

 Desired skills and qualifications

  • Enrolled full-time student (d/f/m) in the area of Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent field of study.

  • Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (Advanced Knowledge).

  • Knowledge of Modal Analysis.

  • Thermal Analysis (Basic Knowledge).

  • Fluent in German and English.

  • Preferably: Knowledge in LaTex and Google Suite.

  • Preferably: Experience in scientific workflow, such as:literature research, reference management, and scientific writing.
