In cooperation with the Chair for Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the “Joining of Metals” department.

The trend towards hydrogen technology requires the efficient production of bipolar plates. A gas-tight plate is produced from two stainless steel half-shells. Due to the complex contour and long connection, laser welding is used here. The challenge lies in detecting welding errors during the process. A process monitoring system provides a suitable tool for this. 

What you will do

  • You detect defects in the weld seam and can exclude defective components from further production steps 
  • You research and record the current state of the art
  • You are responsible for independently planning and carrying out welding tests
  • You use a process monitoring system and evaluate the results
  • The documentation and discussion of the results are also part of your job

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, physics or a comparable course of study
  • You have a keen interest in varied and diverse scientific work in application-oriented research
  • You work independently, organized and structured 
  • Initial experience in the field of laser technology is an advantage for you, but not essential
