Mercedes-Benz Group AG is one of the most successful automotive companies in the world. With Mercedes-Benz AG, the vehicle manufacturer is one of the largest suppliers of premium and luxury cars and vans.

Li-ion high-voltage batteries in electric vehicles are designed to ensure safe, reliable operation for as long as possible. This requires precise knowledge of cell behavior based on an understanding of the physical and chemical processes in the cell. One aspect that cannot be neglected is the hysteresis of the open cell voltage and the associated heat development, particularly with new electrode materials. Silicon in particular, with a hysteresis of up to 400mV, is currently attracting a great deal of attention. A deeper understanding of the underlying effect is of enormous importance, especially for modeling and performance prediction of cells.

The aim of the work is to physically interpret the above-mentioned effects and to further develop existing models to include additional effects.

The following steps are planned:

  • Literature research
  • Characterization of the stress hysteresis of different materials (half-cell level) and of blends with different mixing ratios
  • Modeling, simulation and comparison of existing models
  • Improve existing models to include additional effects (probably using MATLAB Simulink tools)
  • Validation of the model in different driving cycles and operating modes (EV vs. PHEV), fast charging scenarios, etc.

The final topic will be determined in consultation with the university, you and us.

Qualifikationen
  • Degree in engineering and natural sciences or comparable course of study
  • Basic knowledge of electrochemistry/electrical engineering
  • Basic knowledge of MATLAB Simulink
  • Proficient in written and spoken German and English
  • Ability to work independently, commitment and teamwork
  • Analytical mindset and strategic way of working
