Mandatory internship in the NVH Powertrain department from October 2024

The Untertürkheim plant is the home of Mercedes-Benz passenger car engine, axle and transmission development and production. The NVH Drive Systems department is involved in the development and testing of new technologies and concepts to optimize the acoustics of the drivetrains of all passenger car series. Short-fiber-reinforced plastics are playing an increasingly important role here due to their special damping properties.

Even in the early development phases, innovative tools are used to predict the transmission of structure-borne and airborne noise. Measurements are an essential part of the process chain for calibrating and validating simulation results. Robust material databases are particularly necessary for the vibration simulation of short-fiber-reinforced plastic components. In order to develop and validate a material model for the vibration simulation of short-fiber-reinforced plastics under real operating conditions, an experimental database of various materials under different environmental conditions is required.

As part of the practical course, experimental investigations are to be carried out on samples and components made of short-fiber-reinforced plastics using an experimental test setup. The characterization of the linear viscoelastic parameters is carried out as a function of temperature, humidity and frequency. The vibration analysis is carried out using a 3D laser vibrometer. This includes the evaluation of the transmission behavior and the vibration shapes.

These are some of the challenges you will face:

• Familiarization with the use of the 3D laser vibrometer and the associated software
• Carrying out sample preparation and conditioning
• Carrying out vibration analyses and evaluating the material characteristics
• Presenting the results and findings

• Degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science or a comparable engineering degree program
• Previous knowledge of measurement technology is desirable
• Independent and communicative way of working
