We are seeking a versatile and analytical intern to join our team at EMBL, preferably onsite in Heidelberg. Your main task will be to dive deep into the assessment of training impact within the life sciences community, mostly related to the European training projects BioNT and within ELIXIR. You will explore how various communities approach training impact assessment, with a particular focus on methodologies used by entities such as de.NBI. This role provides flexibility to adapt based on your expertise, offering a mix of technical and strategic exploration. Depending on the timeline of your internship, you might also have the exciting opportunity to lead a project during de.NBI's Biohackathon in December 2024.

You will review and assess existing documentation on training impact assessment, identifying best practices and methodologies used by other European training communities. You will engage with these communities to gather insights and learn from their experiences, participating in discussions and meetings with entities like de.NBI to understand their assessment approaches. Beyond training impact, you will have the opportunity to explore other aspects of impact assessment, including strategic and policy implications, utilising methods such as text mining and data analysis to uncover deeper insights into impact metrics. Comprehensive research on training impact assessment frameworks will be conducted, with findings compiled into detailed reports and presentations for EMBL internal and external stakeholders.

Your role

The Data Science Centre aims to facilitate research advances in data science, offers internal and external services, tools and resources, develops common representations (data, conventions, workflows) and contributes to training and career development. The Data Science Centre collaborates with all EMBL sites to progress internal and external training, integrated data management, scientific workflow sharing, AI, provision of public data services, and technical infrastructure.

With this call, EMBL seeks an intern at the Data Science Centre. You will be preferentially based in Heidelberg, but other options can be discussed, and collaborate with members from EMBL’s Analysis Centres and the Bio-IT support community, as well as the Data Management Coordination.

You have

  • Strong analytical and research capabilities, particularly in the context of data analysis, training and impact assessment.
  • Ability to synthesise information from diverse sources and present coherent insights.
  • Proficiency in using data analysis tools and software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to various tasks and responsibilities based on the needs of the project and personal expertise.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to engage with and present findings to a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Experience in successfully leading collaborative short projects is a plus, especially in environments like hackathons.
  • Willingness to learn and explore new areas within training and impact assessment.
  • Familiarity with text mining, data analysis, or other relevant methodologies is highly desirable.

EMBL is Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and teams performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with approx. 2,000 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Hinxton, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome. Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer.
