Bachelor's or Master's Thesis: "Development and Investigation of Methods for Automated Determination of Safety Zones in the Intermodal Area Based on 3D Lidar Data"

The future automation of intermodal cranes requires reliable person detection between trains in port areas. For this, multilayer lidar sensors are used to secure specific paths where people are allowed to move. To enhance the robustness of these systems, zones are defined within the sensor’s detection area where people typically gather. Currently, these zones are manually defined, which is time-consuming and does not allow for continuous monitoring, for example, in the event of sensor misalignment.

The aim of this thesis is to explore various approaches for the automated determination of monitoring zones using typical operational data and to compare these with the current manual method. An existing method will be used and further developed to evaluate the approaches, assessing their quality based on detection and false detection rates of people within the monitoring area. In a Master's thesis, additional methods will be developed and evaluated to bring the identified zones from different sensors into a unified reference system.

YOUR TASKS:

  • Familiarize yourself with the existing system for person detection in the intermodal area
  • Conduct literature research on methods for determining lidar sensor installation positions and feature extraction from 3D lidar data using existing environmental data
  • Familiarize yourself with and further develop an existing method for evaluating the quality of developed approaches
  • Select, develop, implement, and optimize suitable methods for determining monitoring zones using previously developed testing procedures
  • For a Master's thesis: Develop an additional method to integrate sensor-specific zones into a unified reference system
  • Analyze, discuss, and document your results in detail.
