Become a member of our dynamic evolutionary biology team! We are interested in the effect of environmental change on populations and ecosystems and study it with the help of the ecological aquatic model organism Daphnia, the water flea. We study adaptation at the genomic as well as phenotypic level and combine population genomics, experimental evolution, molecular tools, high-throughput phenotyping and evolutionary simulations.

You can expect a cute model system, big data, the opportunity to steer your PhD project in the direction of your interests, and a supportive working environment.

Your responsibilities

Research associates will be expected primarily to teach and conduct research. The research associate will also have the opportunity to pursue further academic qualifications, in particular a doctoral dissertation. At least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the research associate’s own academic work.

Your work includes:

  • analyzing population genomic data
  • designing and performing experiments with the water flea Daphnia
  • taking care of Daphnia stock cultures and experimental evolution populations
  • collecting data at the bench and in the field
  • performing computer simulations
  • publication of results in scientific journals and presentation at conferences
  • participating in the administrative and teaching duties of the group (2 teaching hours per week)
  • co-supervising BSc and MSc students

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field.

Basic programming skills including genomic analysis or the analysis of other high-throughput data are necessary for the position. Good communication skills in English, including scientific writing, and the ability to collaboratively work in teams as well as good self-organizing skills are also needed.

One or more of the following skills are highly desirable:

  • experience with the Daphnia system
