About us:

As an AI chair at the Mathematical Institute of the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, the Chair for Mathematical Foundations of is part of the High-Tech Agenda of the Free State of Bavaria. Current research focuses include (1) reliable AI, e.g. expressivity, generalization ability and explanatory work of (graph) neural networks, and (2) sustainable AI, e.g. spiking neural networks as an energy-efficient variant of classic neural networks. We are also working on mathematically based AI methods for inverse problems and PDEs, as well as AI-based learning of physical laws; with applications in the fields of medicine, robotics and telecommunications. The chair is responsible in a leading role for various large-scale initiatives at the LMU as well as in the Munich area, including the AI-HUB@LMU, the Konrad Zuse School of Excellence in Reliable AI, the planned Munich House of AI as well as the Bavaria-Saxony project “Next Generation AI Computing (gAIn)”.

The position to be filled is part of the project “KI-ROBUST: Artificial Intelligence and Robust Optimization for Dealing with Uncertainties in Radiation Therapy”. In this interdisciplinary project, we are developing an AI system that will shape radiotherapy of the future: reliable, trustworthy and directly clinically relevant. Our technology is intended to fundamentally improve treatment planning by automatically and precisely contouring tumors - even with particularly complex or irregular shapes. At the same time, the system provides clear information about diagnostic uncertainties so that doctors can concentrate specifically on the crucial areas. This not only reduces the effort required for consistent contouring, but also makes a key contribution to making cancer treatments faster, safer and ultimately more effective
